The North Coast 500 is the magical route around the Highlands of Scotland.
This journey begins in Inverness, known as the gateway to the Highlands. We will drive to the West coast of Scotland, with the opportunity to include the Isle of Skye if you have some extra time. Then, we drive clockwise along the coast, taking in waterfalls, lochs, beaches, and the rolling hills of Scotland.
While driving the NC500, you will see the highlights of the route, with many opportunities for hikes, walks along the beach, and castles. As you drive you will be presented with scenic vistas of the rugged Scottish Highlands, whose views are known worldwide and are the real reason this route is so popular. You are encouraged to stop often at scenic points along the way to fully appreciate your surroundings.
This guide will include a full itinerary for an 11 day trip. It can be cut down to 9 days if you remove the Isle of Skye. If you don't do all the activities, you could potentially cut down some more time, but I have tried to limit driving to under 3 hours a day. This guide also includes suggestions on where to stay and where to eat dinner for each night of the trip.
Estimated budget of this trip based on 2 people sharing a room:
Accommodation (usually including a full breakfast) at an average £130 a night = £1,300
Dinner at an average £40 pp = £800
Car rental c. £40 per day = £440
Fuel for c. 830 miles at 148.5p = £1,235
Other (entry prices, parking) = £200
Total = £3,975
The food budget in particular in subject to where you go and what you order. This also doesn't include prices for lunch. Accommodation prices could also be reduced by staying in hostels rather than hotels/ B&Bs. Car rental prices were found on Kayak comparable site - these are variable.

Free and paid guides for the UK, all in one place.
A little bit more about myself:
After a one week roadtrip in Scotland and spending a year in the UK as part of my degree (Erasmus+), I fell in love with the UK. I then came back to France (my home country) to finish my master's degree, met my British husband online and we were on a long distance relationship for almost 3 years.
We got married in November 2022 and relocated to London in early 2023. Each chance we get, we escape London and visit the UK National Parks, towns and cities.
Through these guides, I want to encourage you to explore the UK's hidden gems and most beautiful locations.
Tip: If you want to get a sense of where these locations are relative to major cities like London, make sure to use the map feature!
I hope these guides will be useful and inspire you to explore more of the UK!

1. J'aime pas conduire de nuit (je suis partie les deux fois en hiver) ;
2. Je suis couillonne de conduire à gauche ;
- Au départ d'Inverness : Skye & Eilean Donan Castle & The Complete Loch Ness Experience

A real crush !
Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is a city of unique charm, combining history, culture and modernity. Known for its impressive medieval architecture and picturesque cobbled streets, it has a majestic yet welcoming atmosphere. Dominated by its famous castle, perched on a volcanic rock, Edinburgh is full of historic monuments, fascinating museums and breathtaking natural landscapes, such as Arthur's Seat, an ancient volcanic hill offering panoramic views over the city.
Its contrasting neighbourhoods, from the historic Royal Mile to the stylish Georgian New Town, reflect the city's rich history, while offering a thriving food and arts scene.
I had the opportunity to admire Edinburgh's beauty on two occasions. On a solo citytrip and then on my train trip to Scotland, where I ended my trip in the capital.
On my two trips, I decided not to hire a car because:
1. I don't like driving at night (I went both times in winter);
2. I'm a coward for driving on the left;
3. I'm stressed about narrow roads (even though I've driven on mountain roads in Crete).
So I chose Rabbie's (https://www.rabbies.com) for three day trips:
- From Edinburgh: Loch Lomond National Park, Kelpies & Stirling Castle
- From Inverness: Skye & Eilean Donan Castle & The Complete Loch Ness Experience
