"Starting from Fajã Escura or Fajã dos Cardos, the initial climb is made by zigzagging the southern slope of the central mountain massif, which provides beautiful panoramic views over Curral das Freiras. Between Relvinha and Boca das Torrinhas, the route unfolds in a succession of ascents and descents along the ridge that connects some peaks of the massif, including Pico Grande (1654m) and Pico Jorge (1691m). This area is a consequence of differential erosion, produced mainly by the action of water on pyroclastic rocks, creating deep valleys and huge cliffs, where high-altitude shrub species predominate. The entire area is part of the Madeira Natural Park and is classified as a Special Protection Zone, under the Birds Directive, and as a Special Conservation Zone - Natura 2000 Network."
