Boyana Waterfall

"Boyana Waterfall, the largest in the Vitosha mountain massif in western Bulgaria, stands at an impressive height of 25 meters. It is formed by the waters of the Boyana River, which cascades down the northern slopes of Vitosha mountain. Located at an altitude of 1,260 meters, the area around the waterfall boasts pristine, untouched nature. On clear days, the waterfall is sometimes visible from Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria. In winter, Boyana Waterfall freezes due to its location in a shadowy valley, creating a stunning icy spectacle often used for alpine climbing. While the waterfall is easily accessible on foot, it cannot be reached by car. It is a significant natural landmark near Sofia and attracts hikers throughout the year. Two main hiking routes lead to Boyana Waterfall. The first starts in Sofia’s Boyana neighborhood. From here, hikers can choose between two paths: one toward Boyana Lake (longer and less steep) or another directly to the waterfall (shorter but steeper, and sometimes icy in winter). The second hiking route begins at Kopitoto, an area located at 1,345 meters altitude on Vitosha mountain. Kopitoto can be reached by car, and many expeditions toward Cherni Vrah, the highest peak in Vitosha, pass by the waterfall."
