"Loutro is a place for those people who want something different. A small picturesque fishing village in southwest Crete, not yet spoilt by mass tourism. For example, there are no big hotels with swimming pools. There are no overcrowded streets, restaurants, and beaches, there are no cars! The only access is by boat or as you wish, by foot (1.5-2 hour trekking from Chora Sfakion). There are daily ferries to/from Chora Sfakion, Sougia, Gavdos island, Paleochora, and Agia Roumeli.
It is believed that in ancient times Loutro was applied to the ancient city of Phoenix, the remains of which have not been found today. Because Loutro is a safe natural harbor even in bad weather, it served as the ancient port of Anopolis during Hellenistic and Roman times, and later became the winter port of Sfakia. In the Middle Ages, it was frequently attacked by Saracen pirates, who used it as a base to attack ships sailing south from Crete. The Venetians were able to drive out the pirates and build a small fortress above Loutro to protect the region. The ruins of this fortress are still visible today.
There are many beaches here (Marmara is recommended).
