Named after the former Odeon Concert Hall, which once stood there, the square was designed by architect Leo von Klenze in a neoclassical style, giving it its elegant, open-air character. Odeonsplatz has witnessed key historical moments, including the infamous 1923 Beer Hall Putsch led by Adolf Hitler. Feldherrnhalle, a monumental loggia built in 1844 to honor Bavarian military leaders, modeled after Florence’s Loggia dei Lanzi. Flanking the Feldherrnhalle at Odeonsplatz are two imposing bronze lions, which hold deep symbolic meaning. Designed by sculptor Wilhelm von Rümann, these lions were added in the late 19th century to guard the monument. One lion stands with its mouth open, roaring fiercely towards the direction of the Theatinerkirche, symbolizing the voice of the people.
