"An incredibly unique experience, the Gropius Bau Museum offers a beautiful space for artists to display their impactful ideas. I'm not sure if this is an art museum, per se, and chances are the exhibition you see won't be the one I saw, but I'm sure it will be an inspiring experience no matter what.
The website describes the building's organization as "an open framework for addressing a broad variety of artistic modes of thinking and their social implications". Whatever you're thinking, think bigger. When you walk through to the first exhibit, you're in a very large, beautiful room. As I said, the exhibits change, but the one I saw, Ether's Bloom, is at Gropius Bau until mid-January of 2024. Bring your earbuds! This beautifully designed commentary on artificial intelligence putting bees- yes, bees- in the spotlight, took my breath away. It functions through an app that utilizes the space in a way you never could have imagined, all through your phone's camera lens. This audio-guided tour is available in both English and German.
Upstairs, more incredible artists use various mediums for social commentary. From film & photographs to sculpture & performance to a mixture of forms, the artists at Gropius Bau are impressive. Even if you end up visiting after the exhibits have changed, I guarantee this will be a unique experience.
Price: The downstairs portion of the museum is FREE, at least until January 2024 for the Ether's Bloom exhibition. Upstairs tends to be around 10 EUR, but check on their website (linked here) for current exhibitions & ticket prices.
How long to plan: I spent roughly an hour at this museum, but it's one of those things that some people may fly through and others may like to sit and ponder. I think I'm somewhere in between, so if you're a ponderer, plan for longer.
How to get there: Gropius Bau is about a 6-minute walk from Anhalter Bhf stop on the S1 or S2. From the Alexanderplatz station, you can take the S5 (direction: Grunewald) or the S9 (direction: Berlin-Spandau) to S Friedrichstraße and then transfer to the S1 (direction: Friedenau) or S2 (direction: Mahlow).
Know before you go: As mentioned, the exhibit I saw was better with earbuds. It also required a charged smartphone and the ability to download an app. Keep in mind the museum is closed on Tuesdays. "
