Yala National Park Sri Lanka

"Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's most visited wildlife sanctuary and second-largest national park. Located in the southeastern region, it spans 979 square kilometers across semi-arid terrain. The park is renowned for having the world's highest density of leopards. Other notable wildlife includes elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species. The landscape features grasslands, lagoons, and coastal dunes. The park's history dates to 1900 when it was established as a wildlife sanctuary, becoming a national park in 1938. February to July offers the best wildlife viewing, as animals gather around water sources. The park is divided into five blocks, with Blocks 1 and 5 open to tourists. The 2004 tsunami significantly impacted the park's coastal areas, but wildlife populations have since recovered. Visitors must enter with registered guides and vehicles, with safaris typically conducted at dawn and dusk."
