🇺🇸 Who is Maximón?
He is a Mayan deity and folk saint represented in various forms by the Maya peoples of the lake. The locals worship him by dressing him colorful garlands and scarves, and giving him rum and cigars. It is very interesting to presence and admire the mixture of Mayan believes with catholic belives. When you arrive at the pier you can try and ask any of the locals where you can find Maximón. He is shared between families in the community so his location changes frequently.
NOTE:
If you want to visit Maximón on your known, know that many people will not speak English. And you will miss out on asking questions and learning more due to a language barrier. Many of the local people you'll encounter at the ceremonial houses don't speak a lot of Spanish, they speak Tzu’tujil. But don't worry, we got you covered! You can reach out to the following local guides to take to Maximón.
1. Dolores Ratzan, who is a member of the Cofradia Santa Cruz where Maximon lives and speaks English (5730-4570).
2. Iliana from AtitlanLiving agency (4053-8006).
