"This is the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto. Kenninji 建仁寺 is located just south of Kyoto's Gion entertainment district.
The temple grounds are freely open to the public; but visitors must pay a 600yen entrance fee to enter the main building, and it is worth it.
Once inside the paid grounds, you can explore the gorgeous interior of the main buildings and enjoy the gravel and moss gardens. You'll ditch your shoes while indoors, so wear a nice pair of socks that day!
Be aware, the gardens close at 4pm, and last entry to the temple is 4:30pm"
