Henderson Waves

"Henderson Waves is an impressive pedestrian bridge that spans Henderson Road in Singapore's Southern Ridges area. It is notable for being the highest pedestrian bridge in the country, standing at 36 meters above the road, and is part of a scenic walking trail that connects the Southern Ridges to Mount Faber, alongside another bridge called Alexandra Arch. The design of Henderson Waves is characterized by its unique sun-shading, curved wooden ribs that are beautifully illuminated at night, creating a striking visual feature. This aesthetic element enhances the bridge's appeal as both a functional pathway and a landmark. The project to construct the bridge was initiated in 2002 as part of the Urban Redevelopment Authority's efforts to enhance the distinctive characteristics of various areas in Singapore. A design competition was held, and the winning design was a collaborative effort between the Singaporean architectural firm RSP Architects Planners & Engineers and IJP Architects. The bridge was officially opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on May 10, 2008. Stretching 274 meters in length and 8 meters in width, Henderson Waves has since become a popular destination for both residents and tourists, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape and a pleasant environment for leisurely walks. In recognition of its architectural significance, the bridge was shortlisted for the inaugural World Architecture Festival Awards in the transport category in July 2008."
