What people say

"The history of Funchal is marked by successive attacks by pirates over the centuries. In order to protect the integrity of the city, several forts were built with the aim of creating an effective defensive belt. The São Tiago Fortress served this purpose. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction. Dating back to the early 17th century, this fortification is strategically located above the seafront of the Old Town, the city's historic area. Its construction began in mid-1614, under the responsibility of Reais Jerónimo Jorge, the royal master builder. It was later completed by his son, Bartolomeu João. Over the centuries, the São Tiago Fortress underwent several modifications. Furthermore, this urban fort, with its military architecture, ended up serving several purposes: from quartering British troops or the Army Police, to sheltering victims of the flood that occurred in 1803, to the installation of the Museum of Contemporary Art in this space in 1992 (transferred in 2015 to Casa das Mudas, in Calheta)."
