"The Roman Theatre of Malaga is one of the living symbols of Roman Hispania in the city. It has a modern interpretation centre located next to it where, through new technologies, you can learn about the life and customs of the time. It has also been restored to its original use by offering shows inside.
Discovered in 1951, it was for many years half-hidden by the building of the so-called Casa de la Cultura, built between 1940-42 and retouched in the sixties, during which works the first signs of the Theatre were discovered, which was finally demolished in order to properly assess this theatre within the plans of the cultural programmes of 1992.
In the excavations, the proescenium, that is, the stage, remains of the Orchestra, the place reserved for the senators and the cavea, the seating area with a radius of 31 metres by 16 metres high with thirteen steps and the entrances to the stands, the so-called vomitorium, were exposed.
Built in the time of Augustus, in the 1st century AD, it remained in use until the 3rd century. Numerous materials such as ashlars, columns and carved stones were used for the construction of the Alcazaba.
The interpretation centre, which is decorated on the outside with fragments of the Lex Flavia Malacitana, contains original pieces recovered during the excavations."
