"Naxos Castle (Kastro), located in the old Venetian town of Naxos, is a historic landmark that played a crucial role in the island's defense and governance during the Venetian period. Constructed under the supervision of Marco Sanudo, the Venetian conqueror who established Venetian rule over the Aegean Sea in 1207, the castle served as a protective shield for the impregnable fortress of Sanudo in Chora. The construction of the castle ingeniously incorporated materials from a preexisting ancient acropolis, including marble columns and blocks from the iconic Portara, blending Naxos' ancient heritage with its medieval history.
The castle's fortification system is distinguished by its unique pentagonal shape and its three gates, with the largest being Trani Porta, or the "Great Gate." This formidable entrance was a key point of access and defense for the castle. One of the most prominent features of the Kastro is the Glezos Tower, which stands near the northwestern gate like a sentinel. Originally part of a complex of 12 towers, commonly known as the Crispi, Glezos Tower is the only one that has survived to the present day. Parts of this tower extend to the western and northern sides of the fortress, serving as a lasting reminder of the strategic and architectural ingenuity that characterized Venetian rule on Naxos. The Kastro remains a symbol of the island's layered history, where ancient, medieval, and Venetian influences converge."
