What people say

"Mariatorget is a vibrant square in Stockholm that was constructed in the late 1760s. Originally named Adolf Fredriks torg in honor of King Adolphus Frederick, who reigned from 1751 to 1771, the square was renamed in 1959 to distinguish it from the nearby Adolf Fredrik Church and parish in Norrmalm. The new name, "Mariatorget," pays homage to the adjacent Church of Mary Magdalene (Maria Magdalena kyrka) and the surrounding parish. The square is strategically positioned, facing Hornsgatan to the north and Sankt Paulsgatan to the south. Swedenborgsgatan, named after the renowned philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg, begins at the square and extends southward. In the northeast corner of the square stands a bronze bust of Swedenborg, created by artist Gustav Nordahl in 1973. At the heart of Mariatorget is a central fountain topped with a striking sculpture by Anders Henrik Wissler, titled "Tors fiske" (Thor's Fishing), which depicts the Norse god Thor vanquishing the sea serpent Jörmungandr. This artwork adds a cultural and historical dimension to the square. On the southwest corner, the former Methodist church, S:t Paulskyrkan, stands as a significant landmark. Inaugurated in 1876, it housed Sweden's oldest Methodist congregation. The church features an altar painting by Wilhelm Gernandt, added during a reconstruction of the altar section in 1894. The area surrounding Mariatorget is bustling with cafés, bars, and restaurants, making it a popular spot for both locals and visitors. Known as a hub of Stockholm's LGBT+ nightlife, the square contributes to the city's vibrant social scene. The Rival Hotel and Bar, once a cinema theater and now partly owned by former ABBA member Benny Andersson, adds to the eclectic atmosphere of the square, drawing in patrons with its lively offerings."
"This lovely quarter in Södermalm (the south island of the city center) offers many interesting walks with stunning sights on Gamla Stan. You can also take the "Millennium Tour", a 2-hour tour that covers the most famous places described in Stig Larsson's Millenium Trilogy. "

"Take a look around and be sure to take a look at and inside Stockholm's first boutique hotel. By the way, the "Rival" belongs to Benny Andersson from ABBA."
