"Although Zum Kloster is the first nice restaurant I discovered upon moving to Munich, it still remains one of my favourites. Such is my luck in finding such a great restaurant in Munich with so little effort. ;) It‘s perfectly located in my favourite neighbourhood (and perhaps the cutest street there) of Haidhausen, still resembling Bavaria‘s older housing style, complete with cobblestones and the idyllic Deutsche Alpenverein hut. I bet you didn‘t think there would also be photo opportunities, but this street is incredibly picturesque, resembling the smaller towns within the Bavarian Alps. As for the restaurant itself, the menu is very small, but precisely curated, featuring an assortment of Bavarian and Austrian dishes. One down side is that the kitchen regularly runs out of dishes listed on the menu, however, you could spin up and frame it as a mark of quality. They only use the freshest of ingredients! Additionally, there is also no English menu, but the staff speak excellent English, and can quickly explain the small menu. There are reservations available for the indoor seating, but none for the coveted outdoor patio. On the weekends or winter, I would call ahead, as the restaurant is small and popular. I normally make a reservation for inside, and if the weather is good, ask the waiter to move us outside if a table opens up.
Personal Anecdote: This one of the first restaurants I discovered after moving to Munich. It was recommended to me by a very Bavarian friend who lives around the corner, and frequents the restaurant with his family. In fact, we ran into them at Zum Kloster just the other day when I was having dinner with my sister who was visiting from LA. "
