Tahquamenon Falls

"As the biggest waterfall in Michigan, Tahquamenon Falls should make everyone's Michigan bucket list. Tahquamenon Falls is 200-feet across and falls 50-feet into the Tahquamenon River. At it's peak in the spring, the waterfall dumps over 50,000 gallons of water per second. The waterfall has also been nicknamed "Root Beer Falls" due to the tannins in the nearby cedar swamps that have turned the water a reddish-brown color. There are many trail options at Tahquamenon Falls State Park, including one that takes you all the way from the Upper Falls to the Lower Falls. My go-to is a variation of the Tahquamenon Upper Falls Loop. I hike it as an out-and-back, going straight in the main trail, detouring briefly to the lookouts on the left, and then heading right to the falls. It's 100+ stairs down and back up from the main falls viewing platform. If you're visiting in the winter, the parking lot is still open, but I would recommend microspikes or boots with good traction for this packed-down trail. "Easy parking located at the main visitor center area. This is a state park and you will need a pass to enter. Daily passes can be purchased on site. There is a paved walk over to the upper falls lookout - at the end you will have to climb 94 steps to reach the lookout platform. There is platform to see the gorge view as well. It has over 116 stairs to climb to access. Can get very busy in the summer/tourist seasons. Fall is a great time to visit. We most recently visited in the winter and wow was it still a great experience. "
