"This is one of those secret spots that you can only learn about if someone tells you about it. And you're quite likely going to be the only foreigners there.
There’s a small door inside a WWII memorial that takes you to a secret club, originally founded in 1919 as a meeting spot for veterans of war.
There’s a main indoor space for eating and drinking and, of course, playing cards, and then there’s a gorgeous little garden in the back, under a canopy of wisteria.
Nunzio, the host, has been running the show for decades.
This is a great spot for an aperitivo, for dinner, or just for hanging out and playing cards.
It’s also the kind of place where you might end up with a plate of off-season panettone, kindly offered to the whole room by the 80-year-old woman celebrating her birthday. You never know!
Please note that the Circolo Combattenti is in danger of being demolished and replaced. If you want, you can help keep it alive by signing a petition on the FAI website - link below.
Call to make a reservation, which is strongly advised."
