Goreme Open Air Museum

What people say

"The Göreme Open Air Museum stands as a testament to Cappadocia's rich historical and cultural heritage, housing some of the region's finest churches and monastic complexes. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, the museum serves as a crucial location for conserving and displaying Cappadocia's remarkable cave churches. Although designed to accommodate the thousands of tourists who visit daily, with roads, parking, and shops, this focus can inadvertently lead to a narrow appreciation of the broader context—specifically, the numerous nearby churches and the larger Göreme Valley, which holds a wealth of historical significance. The Göreme Open Air Museum occupies only a small fraction of Göreme Valley, approximately 5%, yet this area is dense with religious sites, including at least 60 churches, 45 refractories, and countless burial sites. The high concentration of carved churches indicates that Göreme Valley was a vibrant center of religious activity, driven by the interrelated factors of funerals, monasticism, and pilgrimage. Initially, the valley served as a burial site during Roman times, later becoming a Christian space. By the 800s, monks established monasteries to pursue contemplative lives, taking advantage of the area's spiritual significance, unique geology, and ease of construction. As these monks attracted lay Christians seeking spiritual guidance, the region's sacred reputation flourished, further fueling the desire for more memorial chapels and monasteries. One notable church in this context is Tokalı Kilise (Buckle Church), which played a pivotal role in solidifying Göreme Valley as a key Christian site. Initially, it began as a hermitage for a solitary monk. By 915 AD, the Old Tokalı Church was carved nearby, likely funded by a patron grateful for the hermit's spiritual guidance. The New Tokalı Church, constructed in 961 AD, represented a significant expansion, showcasing luxurious materials like blue pigments and real gold. Its grandeur suggests that the Old Tokalı had become a bustling pilgrimage site, necessitating the construction of a larger church to accommodate the growing number of visitors seeking the hermit's blessings and prayers. This evolution reflects the dynamic interplay between spirituality, community, and the physical landscape of Göreme Valley, contributing to its status as a focal point for early Christians in Cappadocia."

It contains the finest of the rock-cut churches, with beautiful frescoes (wall paintings) whose colors still retain all their original freshness.
