The Göreme Open Air Museum occupies only a small fraction of Göreme Valley, approximately 5%, yet this area is dense with religious sites, including at least 60 churches, 45 refractories, and countless burial sites. The high concentration of carved churches indicates that Göreme Valley was a vibrant center of religious activity, driven by the interrelated factors of funerals, monasticism, and pilgrimage. Initially, the valley served as a burial site during Roman times, later becoming a Christian space. By the 800s, monks established monasteries to pursue contemplative lives, taking advantage of the area's spiritual significance, unique geology, and ease of construction. "The Goreme Open-Air Museum resembles a vast monastic complex composed of scores of refectory monasteries placed side-by-side, each with its own fantastic church. It contains the finest of the rock-cut churches, with beautiful frescoes (wall paintings) whose colors still retain all their original freshness. It also presents unique examples of rock-hewn architecture and fresco techniques. Most of the churches in Goreme Open Air Museum belong to the 10th, 11th, and 12th centuries.
