"As you keep making your way through the city, you will eventually stop seeing façades and start seeing more stand alone buildings. This is what I like to call "New Petra". During the 100's CE, Petra was annexed as part of Roman expansion, and became the capital of Rome's Arabian province. While local kings became a thing of the past, Petra continued to be an important stopover city related to trade routes from Arabia and Africa to the Mediterranean.
During Petra's Roman period, the Romans built a number of new buildings befitting of a Roman capital. These included temples to Roman gods, a nymphaeum, a "proper" entry arch into the city, and an interesting ruin known as "Qasr al-Bint", or Palace of the Girl/Daughter.
While it is not clear if Qasr al-Bint predates the Romans or not, it sits squarely in the newer part of Petra. And despite its name as a palace, it actually served as a temple. Unlike many of the other buildings in Petra, Qasr al-Bint remains standing at its full height (keep in mind Jordan is in a relatively active zone for earthquakes so damage was not uncommon). While it is not sure whether wood support beams or the symmetrical pattern of the masonry work keeps the building standing up, it is impressive to see such an old building at full height.
At this point, you will have been in Petra for about an hour and a half. If you get a guide, this will be the end of your tour. Regardless of if you have a guide, this is the end of the main archeological site. However, there is much to see if you look to hike a bit further. This article covers two great hikes in separate listings below."

"The last stop on your way in will be the market and the Temple.
There are public toilets here before the walk up to the Monestary past The Basin Restaurantt."
