What people say

"Circolo Rondinella del Torrino on lungarno Soderini is a great spot for a caffè, a beer or the cheapest spritz in town with a pretty view of the river and of Centro, but also for a great affordable lunch or dinner sitting at a white plastic table on a fake grass lawn, surrounded by locals chatting about the local “calcio storico” team. This is likely the most down-to-earth location on this map. The menu is simple, short, changes daily, and is well-known for its traditional Tuscan dishes. To access the Circolo you’ll have to get a 2€ member’s card that lasts one calendar year. I love going here during the summertime to just hang out and read or for a dirt-cheap aperitivo (7€ for a spritz, water and a bag of chips, as it should be) sitting on a beach chair overlooking the river and the American embassy. Likely closed for summer break for one week over August 15th, exact dates haven't been provided yet. Extra info: A “circolo” or club is similar to an association made up of people who have common interests (recreational, cultural, religious, sports, etc.). Oftentimes it also has a bar or simple restaurant that is meant for its members, which is why you have to become one to access them. They’re required by law to only serve their members, in order to hold their “circolo” status (which grants certain fiscal advantages). There are many all over Italy, from small towns to big cities. For example in Florence we also have Jazz Club and L’Appartamento (amongst others) . That being said, if you ever end up walking into such a place and are asked to become a member, it’s not a scam! And oftentimes all you have to do to get your card is to tell them your name and last name and to pay a small fee (2€-8€ or so). Always have your card with you when you go. "
