"The architectural Art Nouveau masterpiece, which is the Sant Pau Recinte Modernista, is a historic UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to 1905. Originally built as a hospital, this spectacular complex was designed by the famous architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and is a testament to the Catalan Modernisme style. Due to Barcelona’s expanding population during the late 19th century a new hospital was required, so works began to create Sant Pau Recinte Modernista, a project that not only incorporated the latest medical technology but also aimed to create an innovative design-led environment, where patients would enjoy their surroundings during their recovery. In 2009 the site closed for restoration works, before it was opened to the public as a museum in 2014. During your visit you are invited to learn about the unique history and world-famous architecture through a self-guided tour. Just wandering around the tranquil courtyard alone is fascinating, as you are surrounded by gorgeous exteriors, divine landscaping, stunning sculptures and exquisite stained glass windows. During your journey, you can explore the interiors of some of the wonderful medical pavilions, which showcase the history of medicine in Barcelona. One of my favourite buildings was the Pavelló de l'Administració, which includes a beautifully decorated staircase, soaring arches that cross the ceilings and several richly coloured stained glass displays. You can also catch an impressive view of La Sagrada Familia from the first-floor balcony. The site now acts as one of Barcelona’s most sought-after cultural centres and provides a wonderful opportunity to experience first-hand, the largest example of Art Nouveau architecture in the world. "Also known as the Hospital de Sant Pau, is a remarkable modernist architectural complex located in Barcelona, Spain. It was designed by the Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and was built between 1902 and 1930. The complex originally served as a hospital and is considered one of the most important examples of modernist architecture in the city."
"Our second day kicked off at the captivating Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau, a former hospital turned UNESCO World Heritage site. But before our adventure, we fueled up with coffee, or in my case, a delightful Cola Cao drink topped with whipped cream, setting the perfect tone for the day ahead."
