The Montmartre district sits atop a hill in the north of Paris, but for most of the city’s history, it actually lay beyond the borders of Paris and was a separate, largely agricultural area. It's been inhabited since the pre-roman era, the Romans having arrived in Paris about 2,000 years ago. Historians believe the name Montmartre is of Roman origin. One interpretation argues that Montmartre comes from “mount of the martyrs” owing to the stories of early Christians being martyred on this hill. Others say it references a now long-gone Roman temple to Mars that once stood here. But the hill was really put on the map in the 1100s when King Louis VI and Queen Adelaide funded the building of a large Abbey that occupied most of this area. This remained in place until the 1700s when it was destroyed during the French Revolution. It wasn’t until the 1800s that artists began arriving in Montmartre. The Napoleonic wars of the early 1800s had led to extensive damage to the land, which put an end to the traditional agricultural lifestyle here. Slowly, the vineyards, orchards and windmills that had once dominated this neighbourhood were replaced with low-rent housing, bars and cabarets. This is what attracted the bohemian crowd we associate with the neighbourhood today."
