What people say

"Alfama is a historic and picturesque neighbourhood in Lisbon, full of narrow streets, winding alleyways and an authentic atmosphere. Located on the slopes between São Jorge Castle and the Tagus River, Alfama is known for its traditional architecture, colourful houses, balconies adorned with flowers and clothes hanging from the windows. It is a charming maze of medieval alleys where you can discover ancient churches, belvederes with magnificent views and small restaurants where you can enjoy fado, the traditional Portuguese music. Strolling through Alfama is like taking a trip back in time, immersing yourself in the authenticity and historical charm of Lisbon."
"The steep streets of Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest areas, are lined with shops selling traditional crafts and cafes. Passengers pack the historic no. 28 tram, which winds through Alfama on its way up to 11th-century São Jorge Castle. Views from Miradouro da Graça terrace stretch over the city to the River Tagus. In the evening, melancholy Fado music can be heard in some of the area's long-running restaurants."

"Ride the iconic yellow No. 28 tram (or the far less crowded Tram 12E) to the historic São Jorge Castle, and then wander through the labyrinth of cobblestone streets, savoring the soulful sounds of Fado music, the colorful houses, and panoramic views. Our favorite viewpoints are Miradouro de Santa Luzia and higher up, the Miradouro de Graça. Be sure to visit the Lisbon Cathedral and the National Pantheon."
