"On November 30, 1864, Union Federal Brig. Gen. Jacob D. Cox took over the home as his headquarters as the Civil War Battle of Franklin raged across the fields and property surrounding the home of Fountain Branch Carter. While the Carter family, a few slaves, and the Lotz family took refuge in the basement, 20,000 Confederate soldiers attacked a similar number of Union soldiers. Thousands died in this major Civil War battle—one of the last.
"The Battle of Franklin Trust is dedicated to a better understanding of a people forever impacted by the American Civil War."
For 20 years following construction of the home in 1830, the Carter family grew their property from 19 acres to a 288-acre cotton plantation, prospering with the use of their enslaved workers who farmed the cotton and ran the cotton gin and household. Unable to recover prosperity after the war, the house and land were sold in 1896."
