Off-Season Irish Road Trip

The Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful coastal routes in the world. Spanning over 2,500 km, this magnificent route stretches from Donegal in the north to Cork in the south. In this guide I'll share a 7-day itinerary with some of my favourite spots from exploring this route over the last 6 years.

7-Day Itinerary for Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way

There are many different ways to see the Emerald Isle from group travel, to train travel, bus travel, to self-drive or chauffer driven. 

This itinerary focuses on some areas of the country that are "off the beaten path" and accessible by self-drive or hiring your own private driver.

We highlight some points of interest that are common to the country, but delve into some other spectacular sites, villages and places that don't normally show up on a "typical Irish getaway". 

The itinerary is mapped out for a grand tour of the country, going to towns and villages that aren't always referenced in the normal brochures and is perfect for people who may have seen a lot of Ireland already and want to delve into smaller, niche areas; or for those who enjoy traveling off-the-beaten path and away from most of the general tourist destinations - getting into the heart of the country.

4 Irish Castle Stay

I've come back to Galway, Ireland on three separate trips and have loved it more each time. I studied abroad here, came back to visit with my then boyfriend, and put this guide together after visiting with my now husband and our best dog, Copper. Most of the restaurants and pubs are not dog-friendly, unless you can sit outside. But the hikes, walks, and beaches and very dog-friendly, as are most of the people here.

Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden

L’un des sites touristiques incontournables de cette région. Et pour cause, on ne peut pas la rater lorsque l’on passe sur la route principale : un monument aux pierres blanches qui vient se réfléchir dans un lac juste devant. 
Attention cependant : ce n'est pas gratuit mais son prix en vaut largement la peine, et n'hésitez pas à y passer la journée ou tout un après-midi. 

There are plenty of tour buses and groups that leave from Galway and head to Kylemore Abbey, a Victorian castle nestled in a valley of the Connemara mountains. Most recently, it was a private school for girls. Take a look around and enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains and lakes.

Kylemore Abbey is located in County Galway, on the edge of Connemara National Park. It was originally built as a private home for Mitchell Henry, a wealthy businessman and politician, in the late 1800s. The house was designed by a famous Victorian architect, James Franklin Fuller.

Another spot around an hour and a half outside of Galway but another must-do! Beautiful castle and grounds.

The cafe on-site has delicious food and soups - a great place to replenish after touring.
