James Blick
"Locals head to this atmospheric more-than-a-century-old tavern for a caña and a “tajada de bacalao” (fried salt-cod fritters) after shopping Calle Preciados and El Corte Inglés. A great spot for a snack and a chato (small glass of wine), or vermouth to kick off the evening. Historic curiosity: You order your drinks at the bar, but order the food at the small stand off to the right. This is a historical hangover from back in the day when bars didn’t sell food, so they subleased a corner of the tavern to a food vendor. I love how they’ve kept it that way. There’s a dining room out back if you’re tired, but I like to battle it out in the main room, or spill out onto the terrace."

"Famous for its cod croquettes and history as the birthplace of the Spanish Socialist Party. Small bites with a lot of flavor for under €10."
