"The National Library of Singapore has a rich history that dates back to 1823 when it was established as the first national public library, following the vision of Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore. Originally named the Hullett Memorial Library in 1923, it was co-located with Raffles Institution, Singapore's first school, at a site now occupied by the Raffles City complex. The library underwent several relocations, moving to a dedicated Library and Museum Building in 1887 and later to Stamford Road in 1960, where it was inaugurated as the National Library of Singapore by Yusof Ishak, the country's first president. The Central Public Library, formerly known as the Central Lending Library, was located at 91 Stamford Road before relocating to 100 Victoria Street and reopening in 2005. In June 2022, it underwent a significant overhaul and reopened in January 2024, offering diverse learning experiences suitable for all ages. It now features the Children's Biodiversity Library by the S.E.A. Aquarium and emphasizes content related to Singaporean culture, literature, and sustainability. The Lee Kong Chian Reference Library, previously the National Reference Library, was renamed following a substantial S$60 million donation from the Lee Foundation, founded by Dr. Lee Kong Chian. It occupies seven stories (Levels 7-13) of the National Library Building and spans a floor area of 14,265 square meters. The current National Library Building, a 16-storey development located in Singapore's Civic District, replaced the old library at Stamford Road, which closed on 31 March 2004. The design tender was awarded to Swan & Maclaren Architects in May 1999, although the architectural contract was later taken over by T.R. Hamzah & Yeang. The library opened its doors on 22 July 2005, with an official inauguration on 12 November that year by then-President S. R. Nathan. This flagship building combines the functions of both the reference library and the public library under one roof. It features a rooftop area called The Pod, designed for events and functions, offering stunning panoramic views of the city core and Marina Bay area. The ground floor plaza includes a café and often serves as an exhibition space. The building is equipped with escalators spanning from Basement 3 to Level 14, and the basement car park accommodates 246 vehicles. Notably, bricks from the old National Library have been incorporated into the new structure, symbolizing a continuity of knowledge and heritage."
