Science Centre Singapore

"Science Centre Singapore, formerly known as the Singapore Science Centre, is a prominent scientific museum located in Jurong East. Dedicated to fostering scientific and technological education for the public, it boasts over 850 exhibits across eight exhibition galleries and attracts more than a million visitors annually. The center celebrated its silver jubilee in 2003, marking 25 years of educational engagement. The concept for the Science Centre originated in 1969 from the Science Council of Singapore, which aimed to establish it as a separate entity from the National Museum of Singapore to allow the museum to concentrate on its artistic and historical collections. This proposal received government approval, leading to the initiation of the Science Centre's development. The design of the Science Centre was selected through an architectural competition held by the Science Centre Board, with the winning entry by Raymond Woo architects. Constructed at a cost of S$12 million on a sprawling 60,000-square-metre site, the centre officially opened its doors on December 10, 1977, inaugurated by Dr. Toh Chin Chye, the Minister-in-charge of the centre. In 1987, the Science Centre expanded significantly with the introduction of the Omni-Theatre, Singapore’s first and only OMNIMAX theatre, featuring a 276-seat capacity beneath a 23-meter tilted dome at a cost of $18 million. Further renovations in 1999, totaling $38 million, increased the exhibition space and improved connectivity to the Omni-Theatre, along with the creation of a new entrance. In 2000, Snow City was established beside the Omni-Theatre, offering a unique experience of a −5 °C environment, a novelty in tropical Singapore. To commemorate its 30th anniversary in 2007, the centre rebranded itself as Science Centre Singapore (SCS). Plans for relocation were announced on April 4, 2008, with intentions to move the Science Centre next to the Chinese Garden MRT station within ten to 15 years. On May 24, 2019, the Science Centre board selected a multidisciplinary team led by Architects 61 to design the new facility. This team, which included the renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, presented a proposal that aligned with the centre’s ambitions for innovative scientific education. On December 2, 2022, the Science Centre and the Ministry of Education revealed plans for the new Science Centre, set to open in the Jurong Lake District by 2027, coinciding with the center's 50th anniversary. The new facility will comprise five interlocking rectangular buildings with expansive glass windows offering views of Jurong Lake. In 2023, the Science Centre hosted an engaging exhibition titled "BTS x James Jean: Seven Phases Exhibition," showcasing art pieces inspired by the popular Korean pop group BTS, along with props worn by the group members. This exhibition ran from December 16, 2023, to February 25, 2024, further demonstrating the Centre's commitment to integrating arts with science and technology education."
