"A true NYC institution, Keens Steakhouse is a historic restaurant renowned for their mutton chops and speciality steaks.
The unusual restaurant is located across multiple floors which include elegant dining rooms and it also houses one of the largest collections of churchwarden smoking pipes in the world (more than 50,000 in total)! The tradition of keeping one’s pipe at the inn dates back to 17th century England where travellers used to keep their clay pipe at their favourite inn due to them being too fragile to be carried whilst travelling. Keens was once the home of the ‘Pipe club’ and patrons were given the opportunity to store their fragile clay pipes at the restaurant. Today there are thousands of pipes lining the ceilings and walls, including pipes belonging to Theodore Roosevelt, Babe Ruth, Stephen King, Albert Einstein and Liza Minnelli.
Founded in 1883, the restaurant was opened by Albert Keen and is now one of the only surviving original establishments in the area. The restaurant oozes that old New York charm and eating here certainly feels like an occasion!
Their signature dish is the mutton chop which I would definitely recommend as well as their Prime T-bone steak. If there’s two or three of you who all want steak then the porterhouse is the way to go. For sides we opted for the creamed spinach, steamed asparagus and hand cut French fries. I’m not sure how we managed dessert, but we saw the table next to us all eating hot fudge sundaes, so we had to try one!
The price tag is high but for the quality, service and experience, it’s a meal you will never forget."

"Few spots scream “I Love New York” harder than Keens Steakhouse. The white tablecloth restaurant has plenty of character, down to the ceilings covered with the world’s largest pipe collection. Whether or not it’s a special occasion visit, there’s no wrong time to experience Keens. Steak, of course, is the move, though it’s the last bastion of the mutton chop. And there’s a lot to love about the classic sides."
