"Independence Square, known locally as Largo (Plostad Nezavisimost), is a central landmark in Sofia, Bulgaria, renowned for its impressive Socialist Classicism architecture. This square is home to three grand buildings, including the former Communist Party House, now used by the National Assembly of Bulgaria. Surrounding the square are other significant structures such as the Council of Ministers, the Presidency, and the Central Department Store (TZUM). The square's layout, with its yellow-cobblestoned lanes and central lawn, is a testament to the grand architectural vision of the 1950s. In 1951, a decree initiated the construction of Largo, which was built on land cleared after World War II bombings. The construction began in 1952, and by 1955, the complex was largely completed, serving as Sofia’s representative center. The former Communist Party House, completed in 1955, was originally crowned with a massive red star, symbolizing Bulgaria's communist regime. However, the star was removed in 1990, following public unrest, and replaced with the Bulgarian flag. The nearby TZUM, designed by architect Kosta Nikolov in 1956, remains a symbol of prosperity and a central feature of the Largo. Alongside these buildings, the square also once hosted a statue of Lenin, which has since been replaced by the statue of St. Sofia, underscoring the city's transition from its communist past to a more modern identity.
