"Birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka -Mihintale (Missaka Pauwa) Indian missionary/envoy Arhath Mahinda Maha-Thero, met and preached the doctrine on the full moon poya day of Poson (June) to King Devanampiyatissa in 247 BC. Establishing Buddhism as the island’s state religion. Mahinda was the son of the great Mauryan Emperor Asoka, sent by his father to bring word of the Buddha’s teachings to Sri Lanka where the king was his long standing friend. It is said that the first dialogue between the King and Monk was one of the best intellectual conversations recorded in history whether King was intelligent enough to understand the philosophy of the Buddha. Initially Mahinda Maha Thero’s residence, but later was developed throughout the millennia by many kings as massive monastic complex complete with hospitals for the sick monks. Mihinthalawa is the main mountain where the "Aradhana Gala" (The rock of invitation) and the main "Mahaseya stupa" / Temple is situated."
