War Memorial Park

"War Memorial Park is a significant green space in Singapore, strategically situated at the intersection of Beach Road, Stamford Road, Nicoll Highway, and Bras Basah Road, near the Esplanade MRT station. The park is most renowned for the Civilian War Memorial, which serves as a poignant tribute to the civilians who lost their lives during the Japanese occupation of Singapore in World War II. The memorial was conceived in response to the tragic events of the Sook Ching massacre, where numerous civilians were executed by the Japanese occupiers. In 1962, mass graves containing the remains of these victims were discovered across various sites in Singapore. To honor their memory, the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) spearheaded efforts to consolidate the remains and establish a dedicated memorial. The Civilian War Memorial was officially launched on 15 June 1963, with a ceremony attended by high-ranking officials, religious leaders, and community figures. After several years of construction, the monument was unveiled on 15 February 1967, marking the 25th anniversary of the Fall of Singapore. The memorial stands as a solemn reminder of the suffering endured during the war and the importance of peace. War Memorial Park, managed by the National Parks Board, offers a serene environment for reflection and remembrance, attracting visitors who come to pay their respects and learn about this poignant chapter in Singapore’s history."
