"The venue for an important part of Funchal’s dynamic cultural life, the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre is a monument of great importance, whose elegance takes centre stage in the city centre. This venue is worth visiting, not only for its historical and architectural value, but also for its programme.
After the Teatro Grande was demolished in 1833, the Madeiran population demanded the construction of a new theatre in Funchal for much of the 19th century. The official inauguration of this new venue took place on 11 March 1888.
Built in the image of the Italian model, it followed the prototype of the Teatro de São Carlos in Lisbon and the Teatro La Scala in Milan.
After having had various names, such as “D. Maria Pia”, “Dr. Manuel de Arriaga” or “Teatro Funchalense” — reflecting the changing times —, it would end up being named “Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias” in 1935, in homage to this blind playwright and poet, born in Madeira in the 16th century.
The undeniable architectural value of the Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias, marked by balance, is combined with the decoration and scenography created by two renowned artists: the Italian Luigi Manini and the Portuguese Eugénio do Nascimento Cotrim. Today, it is a reference space in the Portuguese cultural panorama."
