"We did not get a chance to do Roy's peak during our time in Wānaka, even though it was very high on our list! We were definitely too tired after doing Mueller Hut the previous day. If you have the time and energy though, we highly recommend it as it's one of the most iconic NZ hikes.
This is a very strenuous hike, but you will be rewarded with next level views of Lake Wānaka. You should try to start this hike early for a couple of reasons, one being that the parking lot is reportedly full most days before 7 or 8am. The second reason is that there is absolutely no cover on this track, so you want to ideally tackle most of the ascent before the sun becomes intense.
As mentioned on other hike descriptions, the New Zealand sun is no joke and will punish you if you don't plan ahead and bring plenty of water and sun protection. Stay safe!
Hike details (per AllTrails):
- Distance: 10.1 Miles
- Elevation: 4,297 ft
- Est. Time: 7 hours 30 min "

"This track is especially popular among travellers to hike up and see the sunrise as it provides stunning panoramic views.
The track starts outside of Wanaka and is 16 km long, returning the same way which will take you about 5-6 hours in total. It's a good track and takes you uphill through picturesque scenery with alpine meadows and tussock grasslands until you reach the top.
There you will have fantastic views on Lake Wanaka, the snow-capped mountain peaks and the bay with its islands."

"One of the most popular hikes in the area - if not New Zealand. It has stunning views over the scenery with so many opportunities for insane photographs. Sunrise is the best time for this as you'll be able to catch the one million colours as the sun rises amongst the mountains! Plus, you'll avoid some of the parking issues and crowds."
