Nally Preseault
"The small town of Furnas is home to the easternmost active volcano on São Miguel. One of the volcano's two main calderas is partially filled in with a crater lake. Several fumaroles and mud pools also line the northern edge of that lake. Since geysers and hot springs are scattered throughout the center of town, it's become a popular spa destination. Locals also use the geysers for outdoor cooking (look for Cozido das Furnas, a hearty stew, on restaurant menus). Expect to see historic homes, pretty churches, and lots of adventure activities, as well. One night is not nearly enough in Furnas."
