"As you drive around Iceland, churches keep catching your eye. Whether they're black or stone or covered with turf, they're historic places of worship. The Klaustur Chapel is none of those things. But it's still striking.
The Klaustur Chapel is a modern church in Klaustur. It was built in the 1970s as a memorial to Reverend Jón Steingrímsson, a fire clerk who sang the famous Eldmessa (Fire Mass) on July 20, 1783. Locals believe that this stopped the lava from the Skaftár fires, which lasted eight months, heading for Klaustur. There's also an old cemetery next to the church."
