"Skógarreitur is a small national forest in Klaustur. Forests are, actually, quite rare in Iceland. Nearly half the country used to be covered with birch forests. When the Vikings arrived, they cut down the trees to build their farms. The trees never grew back.
So Skógarreitur feels special. It has short trails, wooden tables, and a waterfall (Systrafoss) that originates from a higher lake (Systravatn). There's a good chance you'll have it all to yourself.
Note: You can park across the road from the forest. There's a dirt lot next to Kjarr Restaurant."
