"One of those bars which you would never know existed, unless you knew it was there – The Up & Up is tucked away underneath a tattoo parlour on the lively MacDougal Street in the soul of Greenwich Village. You’ll see a neon arrow pointing down towards a set of stairs leading you into the mysterious craft cocktail den where you’ll be greeted by a warming ambience and William Morris style wallpaper. Originally the space was home to the Gaslight Café, the birthplace of the historic Beat Generation of the 60’s, where young beatniks and luminaries like Gregory Corso and Allen Ginsberg used to hangout. Although the venue has now transformed into the dimly lit, high-end cocktail bar, there is still an air of the free spirit culture, with a regular neighbourhood crowd of creatives and artists. The bar is inspired by what was once modern and eccentric and brings avant-garde to the 21st century. Owner Matthew Piacentini says that the best compliment he has overheard in the bar was one patron saying to another, “I feel like I’m in Paris but also my Dad’s basement”. The cocktail menu features all of their original creations, providing a twist to the familiar, whilst infusing their own flavours and flair. Depending on your spirit of choice there’s a wide selection, I would definitely recommend the “Screen Door Slam”, “Happy Trails” and “Obvious Jab” if you are into whisky, you’ll almost feel like you could be in an episode of Mad Men. They also have a snack menu to compliment your drinks, including delicious cheese and charcuterie plates which are beautifully prepared. Get comfortable in one of their plush booths and work your way through their ingenious cocktail list, exploring new and unique flavours by their talented mixologists. A low-key atmosphere with an excellent vibe and extremely warm hospitality will make you feel right at home in the city."
