"The current cathedral wasn't the first church on the site. Archaeological evidence suggests a Romanesque church existed there in the 13th century, followed by a Gothic church in the 14th century. The present Baroque cathedral was built between 1701 and 1706, replacing the Gothic structure. The architect, Andrea Pozzo, never actually set foot in Ljubljana, but his design plans were meticulously followed.
The cathedral's most recognizable feature is its green copper dome, a prominent sight in Ljubljana's skyline. The dome wasn't originally part of the plans and was added in 1841. The cathedral boasts twin towers flanking the facade and a symmetrical design that exemplifies the Baroque architectural style. Look for sculptures, pilasters, and other intricate details adorning the exterior.
The cathedral's interior is a visual feast. Pink marble, white stucco, and gilding create a sense of grandeur. Be sure to look up at the magnificent frescoes on the ceiling and cupola, depicting the Holy Spirit, angels, and the coronation of the Virgin Mary. The main altar features impressive statues, while the carved choir stalls and the grand organ add to the richness of the interior. In 1996, bronze doors depicting the 1250 years of Christianity in Slovenia were added to the main west door."

"Saint Nicholas's Cathedral (Katedrala Sv. Nikolaj) is Ljubljana's grand cathedral. It stands near the Ljubljana Central Market and Town Hall. Churches have occupied this site since the middle of the 13th century. In the early 18th century, a new Baroque church was built with a green dome, twin towers, and side chapels forming the shape of a cross. Frescoes and sandstone statues were eventually added. Though the outside of the cathedral isn't as flashy as the nearby pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, the interior is quite impressive."
