"After a few days in Ljubljana, you're probably ready to leave the city behind to start the rest of your Slovenian adventure. Škofja Loka (Bishop's Meadow), just 30 minutes north of the capital, is an adorable first stop. The medieval town was first settled around 973, when a castle was built for defensive purposes. It was walled, burned to the ground, attacked by the Ottomans, faced peasant revolts, and destroyed by an earthquake in the centuries that followed. During World War II, Škofja Loka was occupied, first by the Italians, and then the Germans. The castle housed held prisoners when the fighting ended. Seven mass graves were later discovered from this time period. Škofja Loka sits where the Sora River meets the Selška Sora. This is where the Sora Plains start rising into the Škofja Loka and Polhov Gradec Hills. Be sure to visit the medieval Old Town, the Škofja Loka Castle & Museum, and the many churches. The views of the rivers, with the Alps in the background, are quite picturesque, as well."
