Nally Preseault
"There are hidden villages along the southwest coast of São Miguel. They're only accessible by foot. When you head down the walking trail, you have to decide whether to continue to the left or to the right. The longer trail, to Rocha da Relva, is toward the right. The downhill hike is 3.3 miles, out and back, and it isn't easy. You'll pass small summer houses made of basalt rocks, wine cellars, orchards, lots of cats, and a few donkeys (who carry loads down the cliff trail) before it levels out along the water. There are bathrooms, picnic tables, a shrine to Nossa Senhora dos Anjos (Our Lady of the Angels), and interesting bits of history down here. Take your time, enjoy the view, and drink lots of water. You now have to climb back up that steep trail."
