Fortress Old Bar

"In the Early Middle Ages, Stari Bar was known as Antivari (Latin: Antibarium) and was part of the Byzantine Empire within the Theme of Dyrrhachium. The town was integrated into the Serbian state by Stefan Vojislav around 1040, continuing under the Nemanjić dynasty until briefly falling under Venetian control. In the 1360s, it was taken by the Balšić family and later passed to Louis I of Hungary before returning to Venetian rule in 1443. The Ottomans captured Stari Bar in 1571, marking a significant shift in its governance. The fortified walls of Stari Bar are a prominent feature of the town, reflecting its strategic importance throughout history. These walls date back to the medieval period and were constructed to protect the town from various invaders. They encompass an area of approximately 4 km and are characterized by a series of towers and gates that provided defense against attacks. The walls were built using local stone and exhibit a mix of architectural styles, influenced by various ruling powers over the centuries. Within the fortified complex, visitors can explore several historical sites, including the ruins of churches, houses, and a citadel, which showcase the town's long-standing significance as a center of culture and defense. Following the 1979 earthquake, which damaged many structures, Stari Bar saw a decline in population, but restoration efforts have helped preserve its historical character, making it a fascinating destination for those interested in Montenegro's heritage."
