Fort Mogren

"Mogren Fortress, also known as Fort Mogren or Fort Jaz, is a historic military structure built by the Austrian Empire in 1860. Perched on Spas Hill, 110 meters above Mogren 2 Beach, the fortress was constructed as a defensive barracks and military base to safeguard the western borders of Budva and control nearby roads. Its rectangular design, complete with high walls and corner towers, offered strategic views of Budva’s Old Town, Sveti Nikola Island, and Jaz Beach. The fort's original purpose was to serve as a stronghold, guarding the coast and vital trade routes during the Austrian Empire's rule in the region. After the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire following World War I, the fortress came under the ownership of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and was renamed Mogren Fortress, after the nearby Mogren Cape. During World War II, it was repurposed as a weapons and ammunition warehouse, and bunkers and pillboxes from this era still remain today. However, the fortress sustained significant damage over time, including being heavily affected by the 1979 Montenegro Earthquake, which led to its abandonment and disrepair in the post-war period. In 2015, a proposal was put forward to restore the fortress, with plans for an auditorium, exhibition hall, café, and performance stage, though concerns about preserving the site's authenticity led to the project's rejection. In 2016, modest efforts were made to improve access to the fortress as part of the Budva 2020 initiative, including the removal of overgrown vegetation and the construction of a parking lot and small information center. Despite its ruinous state, Mogren Fortress remains a notable historical landmark, offering visitors a glimpse into Montenegro's military past and panoramic views of the Budva Riviera."
