"A carmen is a type of house typical of Granada, more specifically in the Albaicín neighborhood, which is characterized by having a garden that also serves as a vegetable garden, following the traditional Arab style. Most of these houses have a large wall in order to hide their luxury from prying eyes.
Nowadays, it is possible to find several carmens in the Albaicín and Realejo neighborhoods, although only a few open their doors to the public. Even so, due to the geography of these neighborhoods, these properties are usually staggered and their lush vegetation can be seen from the outside of the houses.
If you want to learn more about these typical houses, we recommend taking the tour of the typical houses of Granada.
On Cuesta del Chapiz, at the foot of the Albaicín, is the Carmen de la Victoria, a typical 19th-century property open to the public. This carmen was built on the remains of a convent that was expropriated during the de-mortification and which served as a prison and hospital for a few years.
Finally, in 1944, the Carmen de la Victoria as we know it today was built. The design of the gardens has remained intact since its inception, preserving the essence of the mix of garden and orchard that is characteristic of Granada's Carmens.
The garden area of this property is full of hedges, fruit trees and small fountains. The cypress corridor in the upper area is the oldest part of the Carmen. It also has one of the best viewpoints with views of the Alhambra in all of Granada.
Today, the Camen de la Victoria belongs to the University of Granada and serves as a guest house."
