"Built in the 6th century B.C., the Temple of Apollo is one of the oldest Greek temples on Sicily. The history of this temple reflects the history of conquerers of Sicily: it has been used as a temple by the Greeks and Romans, then as a Byzantine church and then as a mosque, after which it was converted to a church once again by the Normans. Finally, residential homes were built on this site, some of which used the materials of the temple in their construction. The archeologist Paolo Orsi is to be thanked for the current reconstruction.
Today, some columns and the steps of the Greek temple remain, as well as a wall added in one of the later uses of the construction.
The site is surrounded by wide streets, cafes and residential homes and, on the weekends, by a colorful local market. "
