"A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005, the tiny island of Ortigia is a labyrinth of alleyways of Byzantine origin, set among Swabian castles, ancient palaces and squares designed in Sicilian Baroque.
The highlight of Piazza del Duomo is the outstanding Cathedral of Syracuse, dedicated to Saint Lucy, the patron saint of the city. A marvelous compendium of art history, with its pure Baroque facade and interior punctuated by the colossal Greek columns of what, in the fifth century B.C., was the temple of Athena.
Another must-visit attraction is the Fountain of Arethusa, a freshwater spring surrounded by lush greenery that is said to have inspired the Greek poet Pindar.
You can also explore the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, dating back to the 6th century BC, considered one of the oldest Greek temples in Sicily.
In addition to its architectural and cultural attractions, Ortigia is also known for its picturesque streets and squares, as well as its lively markets and waterfront restaurants. Take a stroll along the waterfront promenade, enjoy a coffee or gelato in one of the many cafes, or sample some of the island's fresh seafood at a local restaurant."

"Ortigia is the small island on which the historic center and nowday heart of the city of Siracusa can be found. It is around 1 square kilometer and is inhabitated by less than 5000 people, who live in the maze of narrow streets among which are listed the historical buildings that allowed this city to be inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ortigia displays overwhelmingly beautiful Baroque facades, balconies and churches, like the ones that can be found in Piazza Duomo. Furthermore, several signs of the past of the city dating back to the Greek period can be visited. Sometimes, it can take a little imagination to see the Greek ruins under the city above, but if you know where to look, you will be impressed by what you can find. For example, look at the Duomo of Siracusa to see the ancient Greek columns of the temple of Minerva that were integrated in the church built after. Siracusa, nowadays, thanks to its historical center on the island of Ortigia, represents one of the most beautiful and pleasant cities in Sicily, bustling also with boutique shops, great restaurants and plenty of spots to enjoy gelato, granita and cannolo too.

"Siracusa is one of those cities where you can see ancient Greek and Roman influences, especially in the Parco Archeologico della Neapolis, which includes the Greek Theatre.
When I visited these places as a child, I imagined myself being part of the Greek and Roman society and how cool it would have been watching a performance at that time, while reflecting on why we exist.
Ortigia is one of the best places in Sicily. Siracusa area is famous for its limestone which most of the buildings and streets are made of in this city. The Duomo di Siracusa is a popular spot, to visit and to walk by during a night stroll. Prices in Ortigia are a bit more on the expensive side, but the quality is almost always there. "
