"The name “Puerta do Sol” means “Gate of the Sun”, a nickname that dates back to the Middle Ages, when this area marked one of the main entrances to the walled city of Vigo. The gate faced east, receiving the first rays of sunlight each morning, earning it the title of “solenga”. However, as urban expansion continued over the centuries, these walls were eventually demolished around 1873.
Praza Porta do Sol is home to some iconic architectural wonders that reflect both traditional and contemporary influences. Dominating the square is a colossal sculpture known as “El Sireno” (The Mermaid), created by the famous Galician sculptor Francisco Leiro in 1991. Half man, half sea creature, this bronze figure perched atop granite pillars has become synonymous with Praza Porta do Sol.
In stark contrast, but equally captivating, is the modernist building called Edificio Simeón. Built between 1910-12 by architect Michel Pacewicz – who was influenced by French architect Gustave Eiffel – it is considered one of the finest examples of modernist architecture in Vigo.
This square is not just about historic landmarks or stunning sculptures; it also embodies cultural significance, being the centre of various social activities throughout the year. From hosting local festivals, such as the Reconquista de Vigo, which commemorates the city’s victory over Napoleon’s troops during the Peninsular War, to serving as a venue for concerts and shows during the summer months, Praza Porta do Sol is truly the cultural hub of Vigo."
