"Over the River Minho stands one of the most iconic buildings in Ourense: the Puente Mayor, a strategic stronghold of the place centuries ago, a gateway to Santiago de Compostela and a privileged viewpoint over this river crossing. From the first Roman bridge, built during the time of Emperor Augustus, only a few carved stones at the base remain. In the 13th century it was rebuilt, giving it its current profile with a pointed arch and ramps. In the 17th century it underwent another modification, this time definitive. Very close to it is the 16th century chapel of Los Remedios, which forms a monumental complex with the Puente Mayor."
