Museum of the City of Budva

"The museum activity in Budva dates back to 1962, beginning with the compilation of archaeological collections based on materials uncovered during excavations conducted between 1957 and 1958. Initially, these collections were displayed in inadequate facilities that failed to meet even the basic standards expected of a museum. However, significant advancements were made following the valuable discoveries that emerged after the 1979 earthquake. These excavations yielded around 4,000 finds, including 2,500 exhibits from the Budva necropolises, which paved the way for a more comprehensive approach to museum activities and the need for appropriate exhibition spaces. Today, the museum system in Budva operates under the Public Institution “Museums, Gallery, and Library” and is comprised of the Museum of the Town of Budva, which includes archaeological and ethnographic collections, as well as the Stefan Mitrov Ljubiša Memorial Centre. This multifaceted museum structure not only houses a diverse array of cultural artifacts but also provides library services and preventive conservation efforts. The museum’s extensive collections reflect the rich tapestry of life in the Mediterranean, showcasing the influences of various cultures, including Illyrian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Slavic, which have shaped the region’s historical and artistic landscape. The establishment of the first adequate museum building, the Museum of the Town of Budva, in 2003 marked a significant milestone for the local cultural heritage and contributed to the broader cultural and scientific development of Budva and Montenegro. The anticipated opening of the Archaeology Museum is expected to further enhance the cultural significance of the area, making it a vital repository of the region's history and a beacon of artistic expression.
