The mud-brick construction provided natural insulation against the harsh desert climate. Navigating the narrow alleyways within Shali, you'll encounter the traditional dwellings of Siwa. The mud-brick houses, with their geometric patterns and cooling interiors, showcase the deep connection between architecture and the oasis's cultural heritage. Despite its ancient origins, Shali Fortress faced a unique challenge in the 20th century. In 1926, heavy rains caused significant damage to the mud-brick structure, leading to the evacuation of the fortress. The Siwans gradually moved to new settlements, leaving Shali as a testament to both the fortitude of mud-brick construction and the adaptability of the oasis's residents. In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve and restore Shali Fortress. While some areas of the fortress are in ruins, the restoration projects aim to protect and showcase this architectural gem, allowing visitors to experience the historical charm of Siwa."
